Kashmir's law minister assassinated
9/11/2002 8:17:00 AM

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir -- Mushtak Ahmad Lone, Kashmir's law minister, was assassinated Wednesday by gunmen who opened fire on his motorcade.

At least five others in the motorcade were also killed and dozens more injured in the attack. Kashmiri militants are suspected as responsible as they have called for residents to not participate in Indian-administered votes to be held later this month.

Violence has escalated in the region since early August when India announced state elections to be held this month and into October.
