Dalai Lama's delegation visits Beijing
9/11/2002 1:14:00 AM

An unusual visit was made by a high-level delegation from the Dalai Lama’s Tibetan government-in-exile.

The delegation, including representatives in the United States and Europe, Lodi Gyaltsen Gyari and Kelsang Gyaltsen, arrived in Beijing on Monday at the invitation of the Chinese government.

The purpose of the visit, the first since 1993, was not made public though in a statement the Dalai Lama said he was "very pleased" that the team was able to come.

Beijing refuses to hold talks with the Dalai Lama himself, insisting that Tibet is part of China and that Tibet's spiritual leader is a separatist.
