Pakistan -- While Sharif's nomination was accepted by election officials earlier last week, Benazir Bhutto, another former Prime Minister, had his nomination rejected on Thursday.

"This decision is aimed at lodging my strong protest against the unethical, illegal and unconstitutional measures of (Pakistan's) military regime under the garb of restoring true democracy," says Nawaz Sharif.

General Musharraf says that he called for the elections to restore democracy in Pakistan. Many have questioned his true intentions, and some have critized that it is intended to maintain his own grip on authority despite the elections.
