Beijing--Sources say here that Beijing was very concerned that Taiwan's democractic election would have an impact upon college students in China, and has asked its educational administrators to "educate patriotism and national unity on college campus." All colleges and universities in the Beijing areas are required to pass "the spirit of the Central Committee to oppose Taiwan's attempt for independence, focus on school work, be rational, and to not be utilized by people with ulterior motives." Democratic election is seen as a threat to the totalitarian regime in Beijing, which worried about Taiwan's democracy could lead to a strong reaction among the students.
