Govt nod to RS 60 billion program of rural electrification
New Delhi: With an eye on elections, Government today announced a Rs 60 billion programme to electrify 100,000 villages, covering 10 million households, within the next two years by merging three existing power schemes and decided to enforce stricter definition of an "electrified village". The Union Cabinet approved the merger of Accelerated Rural Electrificaton Programme (AREP), Kutir Jyoti Yojana (KJY) and rural elecrification component of Prime Minister Grameen Yojana (PMGY) into a new two-year scheme of accelerated electrification, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said.
