Chennai scribes hail top court's stay

Chennai/New Delhi: Journalists in Chennai on Monday celebrated top court's halt of the arrest of five journalists and publisher of one of the country's most respected dailies by a state government for alleged slander. The publisher and four journalists from The Hindu and one from a Tamil regional daily appealed to the court after the Tamil Nadu state assembly sentenced them to 15 days in jail for breach of privilege. "There is remarkable solidarity on this question because that has been made clear by what everybody has done and we worked as one person to get this case through and also to take it through democratic fora," The Hindu's editor-in-chief N. Ram told reporters in Chennai.
