Ranbaxy, GSK join hands for drug discovery

New Delhi : Ranbaxy Laboratories and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) on Wednesday entered into a research and collaboration alliance to jointly develop patented drugs. The R&D alliance will cover several therapeutic areas including urology, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, diabetes, inflammation and asthma. While GSK will mostly provide the hits (potential molecules to be developed as drugs), Ranbaxy will undertake the initial research, development and clinical works, said Rashmi Barbhaiya, R&D president of Ranbaxy. Leads could also be provided by Ranbaxy, a company statement added. Once a compound has been selected as a development candidate, in most cases, GSK will complete development. GSK will have the commercialization rights worldwide, while Ranbaxy will have it for India .
