Ling Ling returns home to Japan
AFAR
4/28/2003

One of Japanís few giant pandas, Ling Ling, was returned to Japan after a failed attempt by zookeepers to have him mate with female giant pandas at Mexico Cityís Chapultepec Zoo. Ling Ling is a 17-year-old male giant panda who was originally from China before coming to Japan. This is the third failed attempt to have Ling Ling mate, and two attempts at artificial insemination have also failed, a common result with giant pandas as well as other endangered species.

Giant pandas are an endangered species, with only roughly 1,000 still surviving in the world, mostly in reserves in China. Loss of habitat, poaching, and a low rate of reproduction are the major factors contributing to their dwindling numbers.
