An estimated 500,000 tons of industrial waste will be shipped from Teshima island by the Kagawa prefectural government. Teshima island has been the target of much of the country’s illegal dumping of industrial waste. The Taiyo water vessel will carry this waste to nearby Naoshima island. Processing plants on Naoshima are capable of handling 200 tons of industrial waste per day but will require fine-tuning. This waste processing is expected to span 10 years.
